Anemia Panel Testing
Anemia is the most common blood condition in America. It affects over 3 million Americans. Anemia develops when a person’s blood doesn’t contain enough healthy red blood cells, called hemoglobin. Hemoglobin is the main actor within red blood cells. It binds oxygen so it can be carried throughout the body in the bloodstream. Too few or abnormal red blood cells, or if your hemoglobin is abnormal or low, the cells in your body will not get enough oxygen.
Women, young children, elderly people, and people with chronic disease are at the greatest risk for anemia. Many over-the-counter vitamin supplements for women are loaded with iron to help prevent the condition. The CDC has estimated that as many as 1 in 10 pre-menopausal women are anemic. For this reason, anemia testing for women in their childbearing years is recommended at least every 5 to 10 years.
There are a variety of causes of anemia, and the nature and severity of symptoms can depend on the type of anemia you have. Some common symptoms include. Fatigue, shortness of breath, rapid heart rate, exercise intolerance).
